The Immorality of Abortion

Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy.  There are approximately over 600, 000 abortions a year and about 66% of liberals say that these abortions are moral as opposed to the mere 19% of conservatives.

The federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act states that under federal law anybody who intentionally kills or attempts to kill an unborn baby should “be punished…for intentionally killing or attempting to kill a human being”.  However, even though abortion is illegal under federal law, it is considered legal in certain liberal states in which state laws have been passed legalizing the process.  Moreover, liberals have claimed that abortion is not immoral because the baby is not technically living, but this is not the case.  Jerome Lejeune was a French geneticist who discovered the cause of Down syndrome said that human life begins at conception.  Research studies have also concluded that at fertilization the human being becomes genetically distinct and can thus be considered a living, distinct being.  This means that abortion is the killing of an unborn baby, thus making it murder.

Liberals have also said that the mother has a right to have an abortion.  What about the baby’s rights?  The mother could always give birth to the child and then put it up for adoption and give it a chance in life rather than killing it.  When presented with this argument liberals then claim that child labor is very painful.  Although that may be true, Bernard N. Nathanson, M.D., who was a former abortion doctor, has said that when they are looking at an ultrasound of the baby during the procedure they see “the child’s mouth open in a silent scream.”  In addition, Kanwaljeet J.S, MBBS, DPhil, is a professor of pediatrics, anesthesiology, and neurobiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center who said, “If the fetus is beyond 20 weeks of gestation, I would assume that there will be pain caused to the fetus. And I believe it will be severe and excruciating pain.”  This shows that both the mother and the baby would most likely feel extreme pain during an abortion.

So far we see that the killing of a baby before it leaves the womb causes pain to both parties.  That is an example of physical pain but there are also mental conditions that affect the mother after she undergoes an abortion.  A peer reviewed study from the Scandanavian Journal of Public Health stated that, “Young adult women who undergo… abortion may be at increased risk for subsequent depression.”  Furthermore, another study published by BMC Medicine found that women score significantly higher” on anxiety scores for up to 5 years after the procedure.

In conclusion, abortion causes pain to both the mother and the baby and is essentially murdering a baby who has potential.  There are better and safer alternatives to abortion like putting the child up for adoption, but the liberals continue to support this immoral murder of innocent children.
